Frequently Asked
Questions and Answers
Where is your studio?
I do not have a studio. “On
location” photography is simply any photography that does not take place
in a photographer’s studio. We can create a setting in your home or
office, working with your décor. We can work outdoors on your property, or
we can select a location elsewhere that best suits the image you have in
mind.
Working together on location
changes everything. Together we can select the best location for each
photography session. Indoors or outdoors, the stage will be set for a
relaxed, enjoyable photography session, where the mood and expressions are
genuine. In addition, the potential for truly creative and unique imagery
is greatly increased.
Do you charge a
consultation fee?
No. I believe your entire
investment should go directly to getting the images captured and then the
finished photographs. My responsibility is to produce photographs for you
that generate a positive emotional return.
Why is there such a
wide range of prices between photographers?
“Professional”
photography is an unregulated industry; no special certifications or
licenses are required. Many photographers, including yours truly, provide
very personal service and fine quality photographs, placing emphasis on
value over low price. Other photographers may have much lower
prices because of their high volume, assembly line approach, minimum
quality standards or, in many cases process the photos in places that
print them as you could do at home on your printer which not only berates
the beauty of the photo, but diminishes its outcome.
Can I buy just one
print and then have photographs printed on my own? Can I have the negatives
or digital files?
Yes, you can duplicate
(on paper or electronically) photographs on your own, but only if you have
written permission to do so. And yes, permission is required even if you
only want copies for personal use (i.e., an extra print for your desk at
the office). Should you wish to have the negatives (on CD) from the
photography session; arrangements can be made for you to purchase them
along with the copyright.
Copying images without
permission is a violation of Federal Copyright Law, which provides strict
guidelines and substantial penalties.
Do you photograph
digitally or with film?
I am 100% to digital. My
responsibility to you is to make a photograph that best captures detail,
color and tone as accurately as possible, and the digital systems are
outstanding for these purposes. Photos are produced and developed as film
quality. Not as you will find in local "quick" processing locations online
or off, which usually result in fading and discolorization.
What if we can’t
decide on whether we want color or black & white prints?
When images are captured
using the high end digital systems, your images can be printed in color or
black & white, or combinations thereof. The processes available today give
us the opportunity to do this without any loss of image quality. So
basically, smile now, decide later.
We want to have a
family portrait made, but we can only get together on holidays. Can you
help?
Yes. I understand how
difficult it can be to get the entire family together. Photographing your
family members on a holiday can be a wonderful, enjoyable experience and
it will be, and it will be my pleasure to help make your special day as
memorable as possible.
“I don’t look good
in pictures.” “I don’t like having my picture taken.”
I understand; there are a
variety of reasons those statements are made. During our consultation,
your specific concerns will be addressed and, by working together, we will
develop a plan to make you more comfortable and achieve the results you
desire.
“I don’t know how
to pose in front of a camera.”
I understand this as
well. Posing is a learned skill achieved with professional guidance and
hours of practice.
Posing people is just one of the
many skills a photographer applies toward making a quality image. I prefer
to keep the traditional posing to a necessary minimum, opting instead to
create an environment where everyone is comfortable and the poses occur
naturally. This practice produces photographs where all the elements come
together to create a more effective image.
What clothing should we
wear?
Clothing, hair styles and make-up
are all important elements of a fine quality photograph. During our
consultation, we will create a plan to ensure each of these elements make
a positive contribution to the finished image.
How do I select a
professional photographer?
Please ask many questions before
selecting your photographer. Ask about the entire process, from initial
discussion through delivery of your finished photographs. Ask if there are
time limits on photo sessions. Ask about any guarantees or warranties on
your photographs, frames and albums. Ask to see samples of the
photographer’s work. Ask if creative or consultation fees are charged, and
if those fees are refundable. Ask how negatives and digital files are
stored. Ask anything. Ask everything. Evaluate the total investment, then
determine if you are going to get the return (financially and emotionally)
you desire.
